What is ABHA (the health ID) and why your patients are asking for it

What ABHA is: India’s 14-digit health account, how a patient gets one, what it means for your clinic, and why more patients are asking to link it.

More patients are arriving at the front desk asking, “can you link my ABHA?” If your team isn’t sure what that means, this is the short, practical version — what ABHA is, why it matters, and what your clinic actually needs to do.

ABHA in one line

ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) is a free, patient-owned health ID — a 14-digit number, plus a friendlier ABHA address (like name@abdm) — issued under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. Think of it as a UPI-style handle, but for health records instead of money. It lets a patient collect and carry their records across any ABDM-connected hospital, lab or clinic.

How a patient gets one

A patient can create an ABHA themselves in minutes using their Aadhaar or mobile number and an OTP, through the ABHA app or the ABDM website. Your clinic can also help create or link one at registration — that’s part of the first ABDM milestone for facilities. It’s voluntary: a patient cannot be denied care for not having an ABHA, and they stay in control of what gets shared.

What it means for your clinic

When a patient links their ABHA to a visit, that visit becomes a care context — a record they can later pull into their own health history, or share with the next doctor, with their consent. The value compounds: a returning patient’s past prescriptions, lab reports and consult notes can travel with them instead of living in a drawer or a dozen different apps.

For you, three things follow:

  • You’ll need an HFR facility ID first. ABHA linking runs through your registered facility.
  • Linking should happen at the front desk, in seconds — ideally inside the same screen where you register the patient and start the visit, not a separate portal.
  • Sharing a record requires consent and the record must be in the national FHIR format. A system that already holds the visit and the notes can produce that automatically.

Why the sudden interest

Government schemes, insurance workflows and state directives are all leaning on ABDM, so patients are being nudged to create ABHAs from many directions at once. Being the clinic that can smoothly link it — rather than shrugging — is a small but real trust signal, especially for younger, digital-first patients.

Getting ready without the headache

You don’t need to build ABDM plumbing yourself. What you need is a facility ID, a front desk that can link ABHA in the flow of registration, and software that can turn a visit into a shareable record. Our ABDM-ready checklist lays out exactly what “ready” means — and what you can safely leave to an integration partner.

Start with the free, five-minute step: register your facility on HFR. Everything ABHA builds on that.

Frequently asked questions

Is ABHA mandatory for patients?

No. ABHA is voluntary. A patient cannot be denied care for not having one, and they control what records are shared and with whom.

Is creating an ABHA free?

Yes. Creating an ABHA is completely free and takes a few minutes using Aadhaar or a mobile number with OTP verification.

What does my clinic need before it can link a patient’s ABHA?

You need an HFR facility ID for your clinic, and software connected to ABDM that can link the ABHA to the visit and later share records in the FHIR format with the patient’s consent.
